" An ancient custom to chase away the darkness and celebrate the arrival of spring. Watch the locals throw away the flaming disks… and try it by yourself ! "
LIGHTING UP THE SKY… The Schieweschläuje – an event involving launching burning discs – is held every year the evening before the first Sunday of Lent in Dieffenthal. An amazing sight. At nightfall, at the Rocher des Celtes, wooden discs are heated until red in the fire then struck against a flat stone and hurled into the air using a flexible stick, creating artistic swirling patterns in the sky. This originally Celtic tradition makes it possible to chase away winter and announces that spring is on its way.
