Ravel's Bolero is a masterpiece that many choreographers have seized upon. Its melody is heady and its rhythm relentless and hypnotic, but Gilles Verièpe wants to give his Boléro all the joy he feels in it, and wants to share it with a young audience. Boléro," he says, "is constructed like a Kapla game. I build, my partner builds, we build... And it all comes tumbling down. And we start again from scratch. I want to rediscover and share the gesture of childhood play, that futile yet essential game that allows children to draw their world, to transmute their fears, to replace them with joy, lightness and ease".
