Exhibition: the work of Kaiji KAWAGUCHI: a dialogue between past and present.

Born in 1948 in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, KAWAGUCHI Kaiji is one of the great Japanese comic strip artists of his generation. This is the first manga exhibition to be held at the European Museum of Manga & Anime (MEMA), which is currently in the process of being set up (2023-2026). This museum, the first in Europe dedicated to the arts of manga and Japanese animation, is supported in particular by the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace and the City of Colmar. It is due to open in Colmar in 2027. This is the first exhibition outside Japan of the celebrated mangaka Kaiji Kawaguchi, one of the great Japanese comic artists of his generation. His impressive historical series Chinmoku no kantai (The Silent Service), Zipang, Taiyô no mokushiroku (Spirit of the Sun) and Kûbo Ibuki (The Ibuki Aircraft Carrier) have all been crowned with success. Through 130 plates (reproductions and original plates), this exhibition retraces more than 50 years of the artist's career, which has been adapted several times for the cinema (The Silent Service, 2023 / Confession, 2024).
