The Fantasticks

A word of advice to all parents: forbid your children to do what you want them to do, then you'll be sure they'll do it! It's not about manipulation, it's about education. And remember: it's for their own good. This original method has been successfully tried out by Mrs. Hucklebee and Mr. Bellomy. To encourage the union of their children, they invent a false quarrel, erect a wall between their two homes and forbid any communication. The result: love is immediately in the air. But be careful not to reveal the truth, because there's nothing more boring for children than a destiny that's all been mapped out for them. Freely inspired by a play by Edmond Rostand, the musical The Fantasticks holds the all-time record for longevity, with almost forty-two years running at the same New York theater. Its whimsical story, halfway between Romeo and Juliet and Così fan tutte, and hit songs such as "Try to Remember", which has become a standard in the American repertoire (and an advertising hit), have made it an Off-Broadway landmark. It is performed in French by Opéra Studio artists in a show for young and old by Myriam Marzouki, presented on a regional tour. Every year, Opéra national du Rhin wanders the roads of Alsace and the Grand Est region with its Opéra Volant. This chamber production, featuring young artists from the Opéra Studio, is performed in the OnR's three home towns. The show then tours the region, meeting audiences unaccustomed to the thrills and excitement of opera. In '23'24, our Flying Opera is not quite an opera, but an irresistible American musical in French! During the spring of 2024, Les Fantasticks will be performed in several towns in the Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin and Vosges regions.
