St. Ulrich's chapel

" Le plus ancien sanctuaire d'Alsace a un clocher roman et un plan centré en forme de trèfle à 4 feuilles. "

The Carolingian chapel of Avolsheim is the oldest sanctuary (9th century) still existing in Alsace and is located by the side of the former Roman road at the Vosges foothills. It has a form of a 4-leaved clover and was covered by a dome. In the Romanesque period an octagonal bell tower was added on top of on the drums of the dome.

Inside, you will find 12th century frescoes on three levels with their red, green and ochre dominant colors.
