St. Ulrich's chapel

The Carolingian chapel of Avolsheim is the oldest sanctuary (9^th century) still existing in Alsace and is located by the side of the former Roman road at the Vosges foothills. It has a form of a 4-leaved clover and was covered by a dome. In the Romanesque period an octagonal bell tower was added on top of on the drums of the dome.

Inside, you will find 12^th century frescoes on three levels with their red, green and ochre dominant colors.
