Giant crib in St Antoine Church
" This giant crib revives the old Christmas traditions. "
Following in the footsteps of the first nativity scene created by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1223, the Franciscans of Sélestat created a monumental static nativity scene in 1934, based on the same principles. Under the guidance of Léopold Holler OFM (1906-1985), who was the designer, initiator and director, the friends of the convent, together with former choirboys and choirgirls, created a cot occupying a floor space of around 80 m2 and a height of 6 to 8 m.
This cot can be seen from Christmas to February. It attracts a multitude of children and their parents, who rediscover their youthful hearts. The fame of this masterpiece extends far beyond the local context. It is one of the most popular nativity scenes at Christmas.
